Bird and Bee Review

Music review time!

So I was listening to NPR the other day and I heard this haunting voice kind of float through the room. I did a little search and I came up with: The Bird and the Bee. Their website describes their sound as "A futuristic 1960's American film set in Brazil..."

I think this album is great. Not like anything I have heard before. Both of the members, Inara Georga and Greg Kurstin, come from a jazz background, and it shows. Spanning 10 tracks, the albums starts out with a very wispy and lonely sounding Inara, chanting "Again and again and again and again, do it again, do it again." What begins as a slow start to an album, almost instantly changes to and upbeat track once a classically sounding folk guitar is added. Odd I know, but it works.

From here, track 2 leads us on a journey through what could easily be a boring lounge jazz band, but with looped vocal overlays, and an interesting use of a triangle and what I like to call the shakey drum (tambourine), the song quickly moves to the unique.

After a few good listens of this album I can definitely say that this group has a sound of their own. This may not translate to high record sales because they will be hard to categorize, but I feel that they will get their own following of people, like myself, looking for something different. Besides, high record sales say nothing about the music except that it may be watered down and easy to digest. Before hearing this cd I found it hard to understand their description of their sound. Afterwards, I don't think I could have put it any better. Check it out!

Stand out tracks:Again & Again, Fucking Boyfriend, My Fair Lady
You may also like:Inara George, Lily Allen.

  • I have to say that your description of The Bird and the Bee is not as good as when you had the talk with me about THE birds and the bees. However, with both of us blogging individually about the album, 100% of America should pick it up very soon.
